Would you like to volunteer and work in orphanages around the world? You can find projects working in orphanages in several countries, usually Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Most orphanages are well structured and offer well organised projects. The children are warm, welcoming, gorgeous individuals. Their basic needs are always looked after – they are properly fed, properly clothed and given a reasonable education.
However, sometimes the permanent members of staff are over-stretched and cannot give them the individual care and attention that all children need. You will be given clear duties but the most important role for all volunteers in orphanages is spending time with individuals and building good relationships with them. It is this adult attention that they crave and that our orphanage volunteers can provide in abundance.
Children’s education is particularly important because when they leave the orphanage they have to obtain proper employment and usually they have no family to support them. Teaching them English, basic computer skills etc, will dramatically increase their chances of finding work.
Most children are an intrinsic part of the downward cycle of poverty. They work for long hours and struggle to buy the necessities that most of us take for granted. Huge amounts of volunteer support are needed.
