Guide to Helping in Greece

When you join a Greece volunteer program you get to view some of the world’s most historical archaeological locations.

Greece has:

• Breathtaking views of ruins that date back 6,000 years
• Historical castles, caves and islands
• Beautiful islands, beaches and nature

There are also lots of ways to give back.

Regardless if you volunteer abroad for a summer or longer, make sure that you take in all of the sights and sounds that Greece has to offer.

Volunteer in Athens

If you would like to volunteer in the Greek capital there are lots of community based projects helping local people. Activities can include coaching sport, teaching, or working with the elderly.

Volunteer in the Greek Islands

You can find lots of projects in the Greek island, including Crete, which:

• Is the largest island in the country
• Offers archaeological digs of the Minoan civilization, the oldest in European history
• Boasts beautiful beaches that are perfect for time off from helping

You might also consider helping on the medieval island of Rhodes, whose Colossus of Rhodes was considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Visiting many of the places to shop, eat and explore in this great island are all some of the highlights.

Conservation Projects in Greece

Conservation work is being carried out at a number of different sites around Greece and the location of placements is dependent upon availability at the time of your application and the needs of specific sites.

You will be allocated your placement following the submission of your application form but possible sites include: Zakynthos, Kyparissia Bay, Crete, Koroni and Athens (Rescue Centre). You might be living in tents right next to the beach (apart from Athens placements), and most campsites have a number of facilities.

In between shifts you will have plenty of time to relax on camp or enjoy beaches. You will usually also have one day off a week which varies depending on the work programme assigned to you by your volunteer coordinator.

In your spare time you are sure to want to explore the natural wonders that are found in this remarkable country.

Whether it be simply soaking up the sun on the endless miles of untouched bright white shores or donning your flippers to go snorkelling in the clear blue water of the Ionian sea.

Unwind on the weekends with a trip to local towns and experience the famous flamboyant lifestyle of Greece!
