Community Development Programs

Every year Mongolian children leave their poverty-stricken families to travel to cities in search of work. Most of them will end up working in the black market, living on the streets, and with no access to education or healthcare. Despite this poverty Mongolia is home to a strong and proud civilisation that once ruled one of the largest empires ever known.

Living with a local family you will be given the chance to undertake an intensive language programme and immersion into the culture and history of Mongolia in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. You will then help teach English in local schools, making their learning of the language both fun and authentic: there are not many English people in Mongolia!

You will help develop the teaching programme to give the children the greatest chance in life.

Guide to Volunteering in Mongolia

What Will I Be Doing?
You’ll teach English to your homestay family and to other members of the community. The 4 week placement includes: teaching, horse and camel riding. The 5 week placement includes: teaching, horse and camel rides, and a one week horse/jeep trek. The 6 week placement includes: a Mongolian language and culture course, the teaching placement, horse and camel rides, and a one week horse/jeep trek.

What Happens When I Arrive?
Upon your arrival at Ulaanbaatar airport you’ll be met by a friendly Frontier-Mongolia representative, who will then transport you to your project site.

Where Will I Be Staying?
You’ll stay at a friendly homestay with a traditional Mongolian family. You’ll be a trusted member of the family and you’ll gain marvellous insights into their lives, as they will yours.

What Will I Be Eating?
Volunteers will eat breakfast and dinner alongside their local hosts, enjoying a range of delicious local food. Please note that the Mongolian diet is heavily meat-based and it might be difficult to accommodate vegetarian diets. You will be responsible for arranging your own lunch at your placement, giving you the chance to explore the delicious local diet further!

Additional Opportunities
On your weekends you could book Mongolia tours and explore the rugged landscape of the steppe on horseback or on camels. At night you will be sitting around a fire, stargazing whilst eating hot lamb stew before retiring to the warmth of your traditional Mongolian yurt. Practise your traditional archery skills and watch local heroes battle for their honour in ceremonial wrestling tournaments. For the less active, wander about fantastic monasteries, museums and galleries in a place steeped in history.
