Volunteer in Zimbabwe

Elephants, Africa

Zimbabwe was once the bread basket of Africa with one of the best economies on the continent but sadly due to years of negligence and bad governance, this is now one of the countries most in need of assistance.

Why the Need for Assistance

After decades of destructive rule, Zimbabwe is desperate and divided. The economic and humanitarian crisis has left the majority of Zimbabweans unemployed, aid dependent and existing below the poverty line.

• Lowest life expectancy in the world
• HIV/AIDS rate: 35% Unemployment rate: 95%
• School attendance: around 20%

It is estimated that 3,500 Zimbabweans die each week from a unique convergence of poverty, malnutrition and AIDS.

Some local and international aid and humanitarian organisations work to relieve suffering, empower dispossessed people and enable the rebuilding of communities in Zimbabwe. From country wide initiatives to small scale work with individuals and communities, they aim to assist in a way that is both effective and sustainable.

Organisations provide a variety of assistance to many different communities across Zimbabwe. This is through projects in three broad areas: the provision of humanitarian aid and long term solutions to those in extreme poverty, the provision of material assistance to victims of political violence and their families and the implementation of sustainable empowerment solutions to communities.

Types of Programs

You could apply for programs and find yourself working in the following areas:

• Agriculture & development
• Education
• Rebuilding communities
• Wildlife and conservation

Work is usually spread across Zimbabwe and most organisations are not confined to working in one area. The project areas reflect the current situation in the country and the priority needs of Zimbabweans.
