More Information

Fiji is renowned for its spectacular beaches and coral reefs: a picturesque string of islands floating gently in the Pacific Ocean. This is true but as a picture of Fiji it is incomplete. Fiji also has impoverished rural populations who as yet have not been able to capitalise on the booming tourist trade in the country. Your teaching can help them have a brighter future.

After seeing the impact that our teaching projects have already had on Fiji, you’ll soon see that education is a crucial part of achieving sustainable development. By teaching in these rural communities volunteers can make a real difference to the lives of young people growing up in Fiji, and contribute to establishing sustainable development programmes.

We recommend staying for at least four weeks to allow the children and teaches to get used to you, and enable you to make the most constructive contribution to the community!

What Will I be Doing?
Your work schedule will cover a comprehensive, varied and enjoyable teaching programme following the national curriculum, at a fantastic school in Suva. Your work will engage you fully with your pupils and will awaken your creativity and initiative. Volunteers help teach the children of all ages at primary and intermediate school level, working a full school day five days a week. The variety of options, from teaching in a less developed mixed primary to a well reputed all boys primary is what makes teaching in Suva, Fiji’s Capital City, a once in a lifetime experience.

You may be directly involved with marking pupil’s work, and helping to produce an inspiring teaching strategy including preparing homework and we encourage you to assemble innovative and effective lesson plans. Your classes will last just under an hour each, with school starting at 8:30am and ending at 2:30pm every day.

As well as this you will have the opportunity to help with lots of extracurricular activities which will vary extensively depending on your personal skills and interests – whether it is helping to put on a play, organising a choir, or helping to coach a sports team. Whatever you decide, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from interacting with and inspiring these underprivileged children, whilst enhancing your own skills and experience significantly.

What Happens When I Arrive?
Depending on your start date, you will either be collected from the international airport at Nadi by your representative and transported on the four hour journey to the capital Suva, or be supplied with simple, easy instructions on how to reach HQ in Suva. After you have rested and acclimatised you will be taken and introduced to your school, which is a half hour journey from Suva. If you are travelling independently from Nadi International Airport to Suva, we will provide you with information about where to catch the regular and frequent Nadi-Suva coach service to complete the cross island journey.

Where Will I Be Staying?
Your home in Fiji will be a comfortable and welcoming homestay with an hospitable Fijian family or, if you choose to upgrade, in a simple and comfortable lodge near the centre of Suva, where you will be in a single sex dorm with access to a kitchen, wi-fi connection at $5 per hour, TV, bar, garden, sun deck, laundry service, cold showers, linen and towels and please note that house rules apply (an extra cost of £60 a week applies for lodge accommodation) . From here it will take you half an hour to get to your school in the mornings travelling by local bus.

What Will I be Eating?
You’ll be able to sample Fijian home-cooked meals which will be prepared for you by project staff or host family. Some local dishes to look forward to include taro, breadfruit, sweet potato, cassava, and cassava chips, coconut and fabulous shellfish and seafood. A delicious Fijian speciality is a lovo feast, which is a meal cooked in a hole in the ground- unusual but very tasty!

How will I get to work?
Transport from your accommodation to your school each day will be by local bus, taxi or bicycle (cost not included).
