USA Gap Year Ideas

Best Time to Visit
Due to its size the climate and weather in the USA varies greatly. Temperate in most parts, the further south you go the warmer it’s likely to get. The opposite is true also. Winters in the northeast and upper Midwest can be quite harsh. For gap years, there are tons of amazing programs in the USA during summer.

Getting There and Away
Flying is the main way into the USA with main international airports in a host of cities including Washington, New York, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and more. Entering by bus or train is possible from both Canada and Mexico too.

Getting Around
Although the USA is primarily a nation of cars, in certain cities you can make your way around via trams, buses, bikes and sometimes even just walking. To meet others and have a lot of fun, book a small group tour.

Visas
The USA has particularly complicated visa requirements for obtaining a work or study visa that is highly subject to change. Check with the US State Department (www.travel.state.gov/visa) for the most up to date info. Visitors from the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand are subject to a visa waiver program and do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days.

Safety
The USA you see on the news and in Hollywood is quite different to that in reality. Pretty safe and welcoming to visitors, the biggest annoyance will likely be traffic jams and the crowds at popular sites. As is the case in most major cities, keep an eye out for pickpockets and take the necessary measurements to guard your valuables. The US is an accommodating place, but once you leave the cities be self-aware. Small-town Missouri isn’t the place to go shouting from the rooftops that gun-ownership is wrong and meat is murder.

Vaccinations and Health
Cover up from mosquitoes in prone areas during the summer and that’s likely the most you’ll have to worry about in terms of threats to your health in the USA. Medical facilities may be of the highest-standard but aren’t free so take out comprehensive medical insurance too.
