How to Intern in Germany

A lot of programs are aimed at university students with the appropriate skills, graduate and post-graduate students, and professionals from all sectors. Some companies have partners, offices and contacts throughout Germany and will find a trainee position which is related to your professional background and field of interest. Thus, they can offer a wide selection of internships throughout Germany with a variety of companies and fields.

Requirements

The minimum duration for these types of programs is usually 2 months and depending on specific nationalities, it is probable to extend your stay for up to 6 months. Some companies will offer a German language course in Germany upon arrival (Standard, Intensive, Premium). Some local companies require that applicants speak at least a basic level of German by the time the placement begins.

If your German is at the beginner-elementary level, we strongly recommend extending your German instruction up to 12 weeks and study whilst interning. For those at an elementary-intermediate skill level, consider extending your German instruction up to 9 weeks in order to reach the appropriate level needed for the internship.

Please be aware that some companies might ask for a personal interview, which will be an instrumental part of your career training. Usually the placement will begin directly after the language program is completed. Most interns are NOT paid. However, a bonus could be negotiated at the discretion of the company and some offer help towards accommodation, meals and transport.
