I don’t speak Spanish! Will this be a problem?
Spanish is not a pre-requisite to take part in most volunteering programs as English is used especially with foreigners. However, the work you can take part in may be limited. Basic Spanish lessons in Spain are included with some programs and we suggest you take advantage of this opportunity to practice before and during placement.
That said, placements are always in an English-friendly atmosphere and no one expects you to speak Spanish! If placed with a host family then at least one member will speak an acceptable level of English. If you speak an acceptable level of Spanish then you may be placed with a host family whom can only speak Spanish. Host families usually love participants whom are willing to learn their native tongue!
