Journalism Internships
On journalism placements you will work closely with the local staff and will be substantially involved in the intricate day to day running of a significant English newspaper in Suva. You may cover activities ranging from national news gathering, researching and reporting on important environmental, financial, business, political, domestic and sporting news.
You will be encouraged to bring your own creativity and perspective to the articles you contribute to, whilst also constantly learning from professionals working alongside you. You will have the choice of either concentrating on a particular aspect of the newspaper you are interested in or work across many different elements. Wherever your goals lie, whether purely in journalism or even editing, production or advertising, this assignment has something for you. As well as all this, you will discover more about this exotic destination and its people through your work and involvement in the project.
What Happens When I Arrive?
This depends on whether your arrival coincides with the first Monday of the month regular airport pickup by our field staff, if it does you will be met at the airport and escorted over to Suva. If you arrive at any other time you can make your own way from Nadi International Airport to the capital of Fiji in Suva. You can take the frequent bus service for this four hour trip across the Island, we’ll give you easy to follow instructions for this simple journey. Upon arrival in Suva you’ll be introduced to your project host and escorted to your new home.
Where Will I Be Staying?
Your home in Fiji will be a comfortable and welcoming homestay with an hospitable Fijian family or, if you choose to upgrade, in a simple and comfortable lodge near the centre of Suva, where you will be in a single sex dorm with access to a kitchen, wi-fi connection at $5 per hour, TV, bar, garden, sun deck, laundry service, cold showers, linen and towels and please note that house rules apply (an extra cost of £60 a week applies for lodge accommodation). From here it will take you half an hour to get to your office in the mornings travelling by local bus. The office is a little outside the centre of Suva, so it is much easier for volunteers to get to the office from the lodge than from a homestay, therefore travel expenses to and from the newspaper office will be higher if staying in a homestay. The Lodge is about a 5 minute walk to the bus station and then about a FJ$4 taxi ride to the newspaper office. Homestays are at least a 15 minute walk/ FJ$3 taxi ride into town, followed by another taxi ride to the placement office.
What Will I Be Eating?
You can sample Fijian home-cooked meals as your homestay family provide you with at least two meals a day. You will be able to sample a variety of delicious local dishes! Some to look forward to include taro, breadfruit, sweet potato, cassava, and cassava chips, coconut and fabulous shellfish and seafood. A delicious Fijian speciality is a lovo feast, which is a meal cooked in a hole in the ground – unusual but very tasty!
How Will I Get To Work?
Transport from your accommodation to your placement each day will be by local bus, taxi or bicycle (cost not included).
