Travel to Cambodia

Cambodia is exotic and offers huge potential for those who enjoy exploration and adventure. Travel in Cambodia can take a variety of forms – overland, river and ocean.

In Cambodia you can explore Phnom Penh, discovering the royal temples and Khmer Rouge history. In Siem Reap, visit the famous Angkor temples of the ancient Cham civilisations, a cultural village where you can see traditional Apsara dancing, and floating villages. Travelling in Cambodia will be a fun filled journey and a great opportunity to learn about ancient history and foreign cultures.

Most trips travel in small groups on tour buses taking in the sights like the incredible Siem Reap. Boats can be hired for trips on the rivers and lakes, motorbikes are available for hire and Phnom Penh boasts sports clubs for water-skiing and microlite flying. The colonial architecture of 19th century France dominates the towns, while in the rural areas most houses are built of wood and sit on stilts.

The country has not been westernised but is very accessible and open to foreigners. Some trips also travel overland through south-east Asia taking in Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

Must Visit Destinations

Most travel companies include these locations in trip itineraries:

Angkor Wat: Immerse yourself in the peace and tranquillity of this uniquely spiritual place. Considered the worlds largest and most spectacular of religious monuments it is the most well preserved temple in Angkor. Visitors flock to appreciate the unique symmetry, beautiful architecture and to experience a place where history truly comes to life.

Sihanoukville: Despite being almost landlocked Cambodia is not without its own little beach haven. Blissed out beach bars and a smattering of undeveloped islands off the coast of port town Sihanoukville make for a great week or two. Previously a well kept secret the number of visitors to the town have risen recently but the beaches remain quieter than the equivalent resorts in Thailand.

Phnom Penh: Indulge your senses in this vibrant capital city, colourful and exotic Phnom Penh embodies the characteristic buzz of all the best Asian cities. Enjoying a spectacular location on the banks of the impressive Mekong Delta it is ideal place to delve into Cambodia’s fascinating history. A trip to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum will provide an insight into Cambodia’s darker times. It is also the best place to sample the best of Cambodia’s tantalising cuisine.

Kongpong Cham: The gateway to eastern and north-eastern Cambodia, use this city as your departure point for the nearby picturesque villages surrounded by enchanting rice paddies as well as the sleepy fishing communities spread along the banks of the Mekong river.

“From the palm tree festooned fields of the countryside to the heady two-wheeled traffic of Phnom Penh, Cambodia is intangibly special…” – Polly, UK
